Question 2011 XLT Ecoboost: good year?

Hi guys,
I am looking at used F150 and I spotted a 2011 XLT CrewCab 4x4 ecoboost (axle 3.55). I would like your opinion / experience on that animal.

What should I look at specifically when inspecting the vehicle? (I mean anything we know was bad on the 2011?)
Should I be worried about the engine, I know Ford made some improvement since 2011 so ...? (btw, anyone as a link to the evolution of the ecoboost: history of improvement ?)

As always, Thanks for your feedback

Hi Dj,

33 200 miles
or 53 000 Km, so not too much. Tires are still in good condition (half life I would say)

I'm at 57,000 miles/97,133 km on mine and it's running good. Stock as a rock and only problem I've had is a bad coil on cylinder #2.

If it's a 157" WB (screw w/ 6.5' bed) be aware of a shudder from take off due to axle wrap.

There were multiple attempts at fixing a known condensation issue with the EB. I would have ford run a report and see what TSB's were applied. CAC may have been replaced or blocked, multiple updates to the PCM, etc.

I disagree with improvements to the EB post 2011. If you can find an unmolested 2011 with the original CAC I'd be happy. I only had one of the first revisions done to my PCM and have the original CAC, never had a condensation issue.

The new CAC is inefficient and the updated PCM strategies supposedly nerf the engine a bit as some report.

venatic :
sounds encouraging.
BucketMan :
- I know I will appear as a noob but what is CAC and PCM ?
- If I go to a Ford dealership with the VIN# will they be able to tell me which TSB were applied or should I bring the truck?
- If I understand what you are saying: 2014 ecoboost is the same as the 2011 but with some patches that are arguable. right?
- The bed is a 5.5' length so I guess I should be good against axle wrap (I don't know the width)

CAC- Charge Air Cooler or Intercooler, part of the turbocharging system
PCM- the vehicle computer

Ford should be able to list all the work they (Ford) has done via the VIN.

There are differences, biggest being a different CAC and larger turbos on the 2013/14, frankly I'd rather have an 2011.

Correct you have a 145" wb

If you buy it, and your unsure if the plugs have been changed recently, go ahead and change the plugs... Supposed to be 100K plugs, but these vehicles eat up plugs with their high compression and CAC issues. It's cheap insurance for better gas mileage and proper running. I've had great luck with Rockauto
