2011 Ford F150 > Rattling Coming From Steering Column
I have a 2011 Ford F150... Approximately 4500 KM.
At around 3000 KM I started noticing a slight tapping feeling coming from my steering wheel while driving. A few hundred KM later and that tapping became a rattle, which seems to be my steering column. And it is getting worse.
I have reported this to my local Ford dealership and they said that they have received this complaint from other Ford F 150 owners; however, that Ford does not have a fix for it "yet". The dealership said that the rattling should be considered "normal" until Ford comes up with a fix.
Of course, this is a load of
because this issue is very widespread and has been for more than just the 2011 Ford F150.
I took it in Yesterday, again, and they refused to acknowledge it... yet the Rattling is
obvious.
This treatment is diminishing my faith in buying Ford.
Has anyone else here had this issue?
How was your issue resolved?
Are you still waiting for your issue to be resolved?
Thanks for reading.

Is it dangerous or just annoying? If they acknowledged it is a problem but don't have a fix yet, then just don't forget to take it back well before your warranty expires to have them fix it. You can start getting belligerent about it, but that doesn't really seem necessary just yet unless you feel the issue is a danger.
Is a rattling steering column dangerous? Seems like it would be but I am not sure if this is dangerous but the thought has occurred to me and I did make a point of that with Ford.
And yes, it is annoying to constantly have this banging rattling while I am driving.
Sometimes I get the feeling that they want to drag this out past my warranty.

If you have a 2011 like me, your warranty should be good for a while. If they have noted it in their records that you have this issue, then it can go past the warranty period since you have evidence of it occuring before your warranty expired.
If you are that concerned, you can try insisting they fix it. I had a very minor by comparison issue with my steering and they replaced the whole rack (I believe the rack in rack and pinion steering) on warranty, so fixing you up should not be an issue. Did the service manager drive it, or did you demonstrate the issue to them? Sometimes just taking a ride can show them that something is definitely wrong.
If the dealer won't help, try a different dealer. Warranty issues are paid by Ford, so any dealer should be happy to fix you up since it generates revenue for them.
Good luck!

SeeManRun - Did they replace it because of the rattle or tapping? What dealership was it? Perhaps I can say to my dealership that it has been replaced before for the same reason?

And yes, the Service Manager and a Salesman drove it over a month ago and they noticed something; however, since then it has escalated. The tapping turned into a full on constant rattle when in motion.
I will check the warranty for Steering Rack and Rack and Pinion.
Unfortunately, there is only one Ford dealership here. It is a long distance to the next one.
Thanks.

My issue was completely different. There was no rattle but a resistance of the wheel to come back when turned. There was a TSB on it. I am also in Canada, so probably a bit out of your way.
