Default 2006 f150 wheel adapters need help!

So this is my first time posting, I have read other post on here about this topic but not the exact thing. Everyone has their different views of wheel adapters (not spacers, just want to clarify) but I have a 2006 f150 4wd with 265/70r17. I want the look of wheels with a fair amount of offset but want to keep the stock wheels. My question would be how thick of a adapter could I run without my tires rubbing and be able to go complete lock? I have read 1.5in is thinnest I could go without cutting wheel studs. I have friends with adapters and they have said as long as I get the correct hub size adapter and torque it down correctly I should have no issues. Thanks, looking forward with what you have to say!
