Default Popular Mechanics review - 09 1/2 Tons

Was a little surprised with #5. But think it's true.

Oh yeah. People will always have their doubts and complaints. Bet those Tundra owners will be mad winning the Motor Trend TOY award for 2008, but then PM rating them #5 on the list.

For all those people worried about the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times, here's some food for thought. The 09 F150 5.4L is...

.28 seconds slower in the 1/4 mile than the 09 Ram HEMI 5.7L
.53 seconds slower in the 1/4 mile than the 09 Titan 5.6L
1.02 seconds slower in the 1/4 mile than the 09 Tundra 5.7L

.38 seconds slower 0-60 than the 09 Ram HEMI 5.7L
1.04 seconds slower 0-60 than the 09 Titan 5.6L
1.6 seconds slower 0-60 than the 09 Tundra 5.7L

This is based off 87 octane and the 310hp/365lb-ft rating. So run some E85 and get the 320hp/390lb-ft rating and how do these numbers change. Also, these figures are with a 3.40 axle ratio. So bump that up to a 3.73 or possibly a 4.10 axle ratio and then what times would you bring home? Think, the Tundra and its great numbers run a 4.30 axle ratio.

Here's my source for those non-believers, straight from the PM article.

Why would Ford put a 3:40 rearend in a lariat? My 04 lariat has 3:73 ratio axel. I think with a bigger gear, 3:55 or 3:73 would have made a bigger difference in speed numbers. Look how well Toyota did with their big 4:30 gear. I am by no means a toyota fan, I am just trying to make a point on the gear ratios. It makes a huge difference on speed when you have a big gear.

6000lbs Didn't realize they were that heavy, but it comes in handy when your hauling the competition Looks like they did a nice job again this year.

They're not going for better speed / acceleration with 3.40 gears. They're trying to reduce the revs when you're going down the highway and get mileage up.

Mostly advantage to Ford...hmmm my '02 4x4 S-Cab only weigh 4450 on the scales...they sure have gotten heavier.

The 6-spd trans compensates for the reduced gearing greatly. I've listed the old 4-spd trans ratios vs the new 6-spd ratio. You'll see why they can reduce the axle ratios. Also, Ford is trying to improve on mpgs not speed and is also partly why they went this route with lower axle ratios. Now I believe the 3.40:1 for the F150 on the chart is a typo, since Ford does not off it. It would have to be a 3.31, 3.55 or 3.73, which looking at the towing capacity (9300 lbs), it must be the 3.55s. Since the 3.31 can only tow about 8200lbs and the 3.73s can tow 11.2K lbs.

New 6-spd gear ratios
1st) 4.17
2nd) 2.34
3rd) 1.52
4th) 1.14
5th) 0.87
6th) 0.69
Rev) 3.4

Old 4-spd gear ratios
1st) 2.84
2nd) 1.55
3rd) 1
4th) 0.7
Rev) 2.23

The '04-'08 models are significantly heavier than the '97-'03 models (including '04 heritage). But the '09 F150 has actually lost weight (roughly 100-200 lbs) compared to the '04-'08 models, except the Screw. Since they increased the Screw by 6", this added a little weight to the '09 Screw models.
