2000 F150 5spd to a 2008 F150 5spd?
 
I have never owned a Ford. Recently, I purchased (for $3k) an 2000 F150 5 speed. I love it. HOWEVER, there are quite a few things awry. I have 34" tires (which I love) but the front ones are leaning inwards. Possible ball joint issues. It leaks a slight bit of oil from the transmission. We're thinking it to be a seal. Recently, I found a '08, same everything for $3,400. It's in much better shape all around (not that mine is a dog, it's immaculate inside - and the motor runs so well!). I figured I could put the 34s on the new one, sell the old one - and save the thousands I would put into the old one to make it solid.

A) Should I do that?
B) Is there anything about the '08s that are shoddy?
C) Is there anything I'm not considering that ye can think of?

The 08 will be a nicer truck, but it’s heavier than the 2000 so you might notice that. I’d suggest at least re gearing either one to something like 4.56. Those 34” tires are just too big for the V6 5speed combo. They’ll both be slugs.

agreed. do you have the 4.2L V6 or the 4.6L V8 in the 2000? the 2008 5 speed is only available with the 4.2 engine

Good point, I figured both were 4.2, but his 2000 could very well be a 4.6. We know what the 08 has, obviously.

They are both 6cyl. I don't care about it being a slug, as I drive like a Grandma ;-) My previous car was a Isuzu Rodeo (1994) which was just as fast/slow.

Here's the REAL Quagmire;

I bought the '00 for 3k. I need a new steering assembly. Tie rods, ball joints etc. That's about $600 in parts and $200 in labour. Fine. I expected I'd have to put some $ into this. Now, I could try to trade up to this https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/lp/sea...ting=228383740 which is in better shape, slightly less miles (207 instead of 230k) and probably has a better front end, but who knows what else is right or wrong with it. So, undoubtebly I'd lose $ on the trade, spend to trade up (ish) and then I want the 34s back on, so now we're into 1k for tires. So barring NOTHING goes wrong in either scenerio, I'm up more $ spent with the trade up, and the question is; how much more do I get for it? :-/ Is it worth it? what would ye do?

ps wouldn't 4.56 gears give me worse mileage?

To get 34’” tires to fit, you’ll have lift that 08 a little, they’re not going to fit the truck stock. You’ll also need different wheels. 2000 had a 5 bolt pattern and 2004+ trucks all have a 6 bolt pattern.

Do you need 34” tires? These are 2wd trucks.

Since you asked what would we do, if the 08 was in much better shape, I’d get it, and get a nicer set of oem wheels and put on some 265/70r17’s which are about 31.5” and the truck wouldn’t need any suspension mods.

4.56 gears will actually help you when you put a larger diameter tire on the truck.

Why not?

Maybe at least 4.10s. Im just saying, 34 tires are too big for that small engine and 5speet. At least the re gear would give it a tiny bit more power and would even save some mpgs, especially if that 08 has a 3.31 gears from the factory.

his truck is not a good choice for 34's. i agree with you 110% on that
