2 Starter Solenoids on 1 F-150 ???
1992 F-150-4.9 Inline-6-Man-5spd
There is a solenoid on the passenger fender well and another on the starter. Called a friend at the dealer who verified it. The one on the fender is actually called "starter relay" but is actually a solenoid and AcDelco parts also refers to it as a starter solenoid. Has anyone ever heard of this situation of 2 solenoids? There must be some kind of explanation for the redundancy. Anyone? |

This is a late reply to the original post, but: no, there aren't 2 solenoids. The one on the starter is the solenoid because its main function is mechanical - it pulls the Bendix out against the ring gear on the flexplate or flywheel. At the end of that motion, it also closes an electrical switch (which makes it also a relay) to power the starter. The one on the fender IS the starter relay because it relays the low-current signal from the ignition switch into a higher-current trigger for the solenoid (or for the starter, on those without a solenoid). But most parts stores & manufacturers INCORRECTLY refer to the relay as a solenoid, too.
