2.7 or 3.5 Eco boost

I am close to ordering my Lariat it will be RWD I will not be towing anything except maybe a utility trailer. And am retired so its a daily driver road tripping grocery getter. I have a 2014 xlt with the 3.5 but have heard great things about the 2.7. What are your thoughts for the intended use of my new truck?

If I weren't planning on towing over 5000 lbs I'd save the money and get the 2.7. And it will pull more than that. I'd just err on the side of more power if I were pulling over 5K.

It seems that if you don't need or care about much trailer weight, and won't be tuning or modifying for more power, there's no compelling reason to spend more money for the 3.5 that burns more gas. Stock for stock when people race them, the 2.7 keeps up with the 3.5 just fine too.

Edit: Do check GVWR and payload

Yeah, I can't think of any reason for you to go 3.5 over the 2.7. The 2.7 is also built tougher from what I understand.

I'd get the 2.7, not even a second thought. It's an underappreciated powerplant, very quick and great MPG...that 2.7 is more engine than you probably need, it's very quick. I have a friend that has a XLT with 33" tires and his 2.7 is still really quick(not sure of his gear ratio but he hasn't done anything to it, bought it like that from the dealer). I think he said he gets around 24 MPG, I get about 18.5 MPG with my 3.5 and 31" tires.

I’ve never known anyone who said, “you know, I shoulda got the smaller engine.”
Just my 2 cents.

Maybe if you've never driven a 2.7 Eco Boost F-150 you might say that!!

X2 on underappreciated I had a 2.7 in the 2015 I had loved that engine very responsive!!And FWIW I have a 2017 now with the 3.5 Eco Boost and 10 speed 4x4 Crew Cab the 2015 was a Super Cab 4x4 the 17 is only 2 tenths faster in the 1/4 mile than the 2015 was!!

lol..if the2.7 is enough for you, take the 2.7, if you have enough money, take the 3.5?
