Get XLT 301a with HDPP and Max Tow and never look back or want another truck. It will pull the same trailer up that hill in 4th at 2500 rpm 55 mph.
What is the GVWR of that camper ?
Forget tow ratings. Concentrate on payload capacity.

Sounds about right. I towed just over 6000lbs through the Appalachians in my 2018 3.5 EB with 3.31 rear end (10 speed) and had no issues whatsoever. Put the transmission in tow/haul mode and locked out 10th gear since its so closely geared with 9th. Never felt as if the truck was in the least bit struggling. The immense low end torque makes these things feel like diesels when towing.

With the new trucks, it was a tough choice between the 5.0 and the 3.5, both are great power houses, the deciding factor was the Max Tow package, the 5.0 similarly equipped but with a lower rated receiver would have cost more. If the OP is not looking for a "luxury" truck, IE Lariat +, the XLT HDPP with 3.5 IS the way to go! The only downside is the larger turning radius.

Mine had the 6 speed, which is geared much higher than the 10 speed, so you can imagine the impressive pulling power if it can move all that with 3.15 gears! There is a BIG negative though, with that power came a lot of heat. It did get hot when I pushed it too hard by having NOT locked out 5 & 6 going up that mountain.

For the OP I think the HDPP may be overkill if they tow 7000lbs only 6-10 times per year. I'd personally recommend the HDPP only for people who tow several times per year over several thousand miles. Otherwise they'll feel it at the pump for the remainder of the year when the truck is used as a daily driver. For 2018+ I believe the 3.5EB with 3.55 gears and max tow package should be sufficient. Unless, of course, larger tires are under consideration or they completely don't care for MPGs - then I'd personally opt for the HDPP. All comes down to preferences and priorities honestly.

The way I see it, if I can't tow it with the Platinum, then it is time to step up to a 1 ton, skipping 3/4 ton for the obvious reason since my next upgrade will be a 5th wheel. Properly loaded the Platinum I have can tow up to a 7600 GVWR trailer without being overloaded. It is right at the edge though, but I pretty much have the truck empty when towing, the wife drives her Focus, and we found having the second car to be a blessing when doing long trips.
In a couple years, YIKES!, my daughter will have her license, then she gets the Focus, my wife gets my Plat and I get the SD. Then we get the 5th wheel we want. Got it all worked out.

The GVRW of my camper is 7700 lbs. I have weighed it on the government scales and the way we have it loaded with all gear and water is 6400 lbs
