i put new bulbs in them and they wont work when you push the pedial down? but do work as a parking light

Not sure if it would be the same but had a problem with my wife's 2008 Fusion where the brake lights would come on by themselves. Turned out to be the brake light switch just above the brake pedal. I'm guessing you have a switch that has gone bad between the brake pedal and the lights but you'll have to find it, might be in a different place on a 1977 truck.
