Default '07 Shifter Problems

Got into my 2007 F-150 today and turned the key and it did nothing. Got to messing around some and put it in neutral (or close to it) and it started. Got to messing with my shifter and noticed it was loose between drive and neutral, and that also when it says its in Park, it was actually in Reverse. I'm assuming the shift lever got off somehow, but I can't seem to figure out how. Can anyone help?

Crawl underneath the truck, and look at where the cable connects to the linkage on the transmission. There is a chance that the clip is worn/broke, and the cable has play, instead of being securely clipped in.

You're exactly right. Do I have to replace the whole cable? Or just the clip part?

Here it is sliding within that plastic clip until it catches at the end like in the next picture.

You would have to check with a dealer on that. I had to replace my whole cable, because it melted on my exhaust, and snapped.
The new one has the clip on it of course. You have to open up the steering column, and do a little swearing re-routing the new cable, but it's really not all that hard of a job.

If I remember correctly, it was around $60 for a new cable fyi.
