What year diesels to avoid?

Doing some online shopping at whats out there in the Superduty lines. I used to have a 99 F350 Dually with the 7.3, good strong engine, horrible transmission.

So if I were to add a SD, what years should I consider, and which to avoid, this would include the transmissions.

Anything 2012 and newer will be great. The trans behind the 6.7 is fantastic. I would avoid the 6.4 at all costs, and I would avoid the 6.0 unless you don't mind upgrading the weak points. Monetarily, it only makes sense to get a 6.7L.

 Thats what I thought, but wasn't sure. I knew the 6.0 was junk, but wasn't sure on the 6.4. Have heard nothing bad about the 6.7 and the two I test drove had tons of power, lit the back end pulling onto a county highway.

The 6.0 can be stout, just have to make sure do the head studs and coolers.

And a 6.0, even with the upgrades needed, will be waaaaaay cheaper then a 6.7 if looking at it strictly from financial viewpoint.

I know many that have and love the 6.0 once they have beefed them up with head studs and coolers. Heck a 6.0 truck here in SD are like dime store candy. They are everywhere because guys didn't want to put the money. I imagine it depends on where you live.

A lot of guys bulletproof the 6.0 and end up with a pretty good engine. The 6.4 is more problematic in most peoples opinion. I think Ford hit a home run with the 6.7 and other then sensors going out they've been pretty good. All diesels running the new emission controls can have problems.

the only one i would absolutely avoid is the 6.4 2008-2010. if you get a 6.0 2003-2007 be prepared to put some money into it to make it reliable.

Personally I would avoid SD's with the 6.0/6.4 PS's. Unless you can buy one really really cheap and then spend the $$$$ to bulletproof it. Or better yet buy one that's already been updated.

I really like my 6.7 so far, its been perfect, and easy to maintain. We have travelled 2500 miles in the last week and with a few hundred local city type miles in between. Its averaged 15.9 overall, and the majority of the highway miles were all at about 80mph on the interstate through the ozarks, Appalachians, Smokies and Blue Ridge. Cant really ask for better from DRW 4x4 Crew Cab with 3.73 gears.

Is that with our without the trailer attached? I ran some numbers, just not in the cards yet. Was going to give my truck to my wife and trade her Focus in on a SD, but now that IL passed a tax increase, aint gonna happen.
