Question Opinions? 96 F250 7.3L

I have the opportunity to get a 96 f250 xlt supercab longbox 7.3l turbo diesel with 30000 original miles. I would plan on jacking it up 6" and putting some 35's or 37's on it. A fellow is selling it for $11000. Im thinking the diesel might be able to do better mpg on the highway than my 07 f150, plus it might have a bit more "get up and go" than the 5.4. 7.3L i have heard great things about.

any of you have a 96 f250? how do ya like it?

thanks for any input.

i have a 97 f250, but it has the 460. truck wise (minus the engine) i love the thing to death. and comparing the price of that truck to what they are worth here, i would run to that guys house and get that thing. a diesel with that low of miles (9th gen) would be 13-17k here. i couldn't find any when i was shopping 3 weeks ago for my f250 for less then 6k with less then 180k miles on them.

iv heard only good things about the 7.3l (never personally driven one, just have friends with the engine) there bullet proof, way better then any newer ford diesel engine.

in short, the truck is amazing, you will see 15-19 mpg with the 7.3l, real world numbers.

I would say jump all over that...or let me know where it is and I will buy it. The 7.3 has proven to be one of the most durable and dependable motors ford ever made. It will not produce the high levels of HP and TRQ like the newer models unless you make some serious modifications; however, if you are looking for a great engine, that will be it.

If you put a lift, wheels, and tires on it, your mileage will not be much better than your F150, if at all. The most I ever saw out of my 250 with a similar set-up was around 14 mpg on the highway.

It is a great vehicle. I just sold mine ('95 7.3l) for my 2012 5.0. I only got rid of it because of the rust. I got 18-19mpg on the highway, 16 in the city. If you don't buy this truck, I would seriously like to know where to find it. If you pass on it, please PM me.

Default `97 f250 7.3

Hi out there,
I have the chance to get a `97 F 250 7.3 A/T 4x4 over here in Germany, price looks awesome cheap, couldn´t check yet if it`s worth it or not, it`s about 250 mls from my home. That`s where I`d like to ask you guys about these engines, I only heard and read positive, but are there any known issues like injectors/Diesel pump or anything else specific to watch out for? The ad says it has 221,000 km on it, which wouldn`t be too much for these mills, but if it`s 221,000 mls, well that`s something different, how many mls can I expect it to make, if maintained and treated well??? This is the first time of dealing with a Diesel, always been a gas guy, but the price...
Well, TIA for all your opinions, will let you know, looked at a 1995 F150 Eddie Bauer with 160.000 mls yesterday, dang, what a rustbucket and asking 1,000 € more than the guy with the 7.3....

So long,
Ingo

there is a 95 7.3l here for sale that has 350k miles on it, they still want $4500 for it.

i dont know of any 7.3l problems, the weak spot is the transmission. i know around where i live, a 97 7.3l in good shape with 150k miles would run me around 12k, i think there over priced since i can buy a 2000 for that.....but there reliable as hell and just dont stop running.

Hey, thanks for your quick reply, they`re asking €4.000 which is roughly $ 4.000 comparing income and living cost, so it could be a bargain, hope to find out tomorrow or on wed.....

I have a long history with the 7.3 and 6.0. Both are great, yes I said the 6.0 is a great engine if maintained and fixed correctly when broken. My last truck was a 95 7.3. Look into the ttb axle that is on the front if it's an F250. They are terrible. Look over the tranny and like other's have said, the mileage will drop like anything else with 35's and especially with 37's. As for get up and go, the 5.4 has more get up and go but the torque for maintaining speed and hills will keep it moving a lot more effortlessly compared to the 5.4.
