Which one? '99 F350 vs. '92 F450
Long story short, a buddy of mine is looking for a truck to do some hauling. Mostly horse trailers. He found a couple super duties duallys. One being a 1999 F350 with the 7.3 turbo diesel and an automatic allison tranny. The other is a 1992 F450 7.3 with a 5-speed. Neither one of them has a bed on them. He would just build a basic flatbed to accept a 5th wheel hitch.
If you had to pick, which one would it be? Pretty much a matter of money to spend vs. practicality.

if he can afford it get the 99 f350.... i have a 93 model witch is the same as the 92... and its hands down a mean and badass truck... but that 99 would walk circles around it ... and that 5 speed cost like 750 bucks to put a clutch and pressure plate in... i would much rather have an automatic

The 7.3L Direct Injection Turbo Diesel or the "PowerStroke" was introduced in 1994. Pre 94 were non Turbo Indirect Injection. In 1999 the "stroke" was the most powerful 7.3L Ford released. They did this to compete with the release of the 5.9L 24 Valve Cummins in the Dodge Ram. They did this by changing the parameters in the ECM. In 2000 they upped the power band again.
However, they were not released from the factory with an Allison automatic transmission. They were released with a 4R100 4 Speed automatic. Only General Motors released the Allison transmission with their "DuraMaxx" HD trucks. However, there is an adapter available to mate the Allison to the 7.3L.
If in fact the 99 has had the Allison conversion, tell him to buy the 99.
