Keep it or replace it?
 

Hey guys I've had a few gas Fords in my life and my current truck is a '97 HD 5.8L with 255k. Its a work truck and a daily driver. There's a bunch of work it needs, probably uses/leaks a quart of oil a month depending on how much I drive. I was thinking about replacing it with a 1990 7.3 NA IDI with a little bit of work done to it, but still needs a few things. I have no problem with mechanical work, but never owned a diesel before.

Everything I've read about the NA 7.3 is good, except its slow. Its a work truck, so I don't need to be fast, but will I hate the difference? Sometimes I trailer cars around, but that's about it. Its probably overkill for my towing needs, but I was more thinking of the reliability factor. I'm also a fireman, so I need to get to work in the worst weather without fail.

How much more life can I really expect to get out of the 5.8? Anyone ever owned both? Preferences?

Just a thought, but what about a fresh engine for the current truck? I would not be interested in a 27 year old F250. The front end (tie rod ends, ball joints & track beam bushings) are probably about shot, and any significant engine or fuel system issue can get you upside down ($$) real fast. The glow plug harness also tends to fry itself when it gets old. If I was an on-call first responder, that old oil burner would NOT be on my candidate list.

Yeah, you wanna replace a worn out truck with an even older worn out truck? Kind of a no-brainer here...

I have a 6.9L IDI and while I love the sound, she's a dog. It can do highway speeds unloaded but has trouble keeping 55 with a 5th wheel trailer. That's why I don't use it as my daily driver, just as a temporary work horse.

I've spoke to the guy and it sounds like hes put work into it. I've also talked him down on the price. Haven't pulled the trigger yet, you guys bring up some good points. Its tough, there's alot of mixed opinions out there.

This is just personal opinion, but after looking at the picture and reading the ad, run - don't walk - away from that thing. In the dictionary under "basket case" you'll probably find that same picture! It's your deal so I'm not going to belabor the subject but that just looks like a money bomb waiting to go off.

If I were you I'd take your current 5.8L and get it professionally rebuilt, all new seals, gaskets, rings, vacuum lines and bored out a bit. You'll have a fantastic truck that will increase in value but will also be a pleasure to drive.

Since we don't know your capability level, I'll recommend buying a new vehicle. Trade your current one in for a decent price to bring down the balance (and your payment). Enjoy life knowing you have a good, reliable truck capable of anything you throw at it.
