What was the last year the Diesel SD's just needed fuel and none of this other blue tec/emissions crap.

2010 was the last year for no Diesel Emissions/Exhaust Fluid (DEF), but they still had a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Because they had no DEF/catalyst they had to go into filter cleaning mode quite frequently and suffer poor fuel economy as a result. Prior to that you have the late-03 thru 07 trucks with the 6.0. That engine is a crapshoot. Maybe you'll get a good one, maybe you won't. They also had a problematic EGR system. Prior to that you have the magnificent 7.3 coupled to the dispicable 4r100 transmission. Great engine, horrible transmission. And they're getting old.
Probably the best overall powertrain is the 11-up, despite the emissions.
