Can't speak for anything other than the 2017 F350 6.7L Powerstroke, but I used ScanTool 426101 OBDLink MX Bluetooth Professional OBD-II Scan Tool and the FORScan application (iPhone or Android) to actively monitor almost any PID you want, including those for EGT temps and a specific PID that tells you when your truck is in regen mode (Active or Off). The (free) Windows version of FORScan allows you to CHANGE many of the values throughout most of your control modules in the truck, too.

There is a misunderstanding of what the DEF is used for. It is sprayed into the exhaust SCR to reduce NOx, which goes up with the exhaust temperature, so the harder the engine works, the more NOx is produced and the more DEF is used. The regen process to remove soot from the DPF happens passively when EGT4 gets above 700 degrees, and actively when soot indicators indicate the DPF is full of soot by injecting extra fuel into the exhaust system. While there is only a 2 second indicator on the dash, the active regen process lasts for 12-30 miles in my truck, a 2015.
During a regen cycle, your truck will tend to run a higher than normal boost level relative to speed/pedal position and fuel economy will plummet. We’re talking a 5-10mpg drop. If you notice the boost gauge climbing north of 10psi when you’re barely touching the gas pedal on level ground, chances are you’re in a regen cycle.

Just some unsolicited information. I travel about 10,000 miles per month and when I am in Texas I will grab the Super S DEF from Buc'ees and get about half the life that I do from the BlueDEF. Whatever the difference may be between the brands, the BlueDEF is significantly more efficient of a product.
