i completely agree with that statement that ford made a HUGE mistake when they got rid fo the 7.3. it was a damn good engine

The whole debate is just totally up to opinion. All the crap about the 7.3 being the best motor is laughed at by all the newer powerstroke owners. I just sold a 6.4 2008 SD and it was a fantastic truck. Had a programmer and exhaust and dynoed at 511rwhp and 1016rwtq and I drove it set like that everyday and didn't have a single problem. I sold it at 93k miles. I know a guy in another forum who tuned his from the first day off the lot and hasn't had a problem and it now has 140k on it. The new 6.7 is proving to be a great motor too. It was just from 2003-2007 that was riddled with issues due to emission control equipment messing them up.

The ford diesels are torque monsters and the transmissions will hold out no problems until you get up over 550rwhp. Thats better than the Allisons too. The Allison in the duramax is okay as stock but if you tune it they have all kinds of problems. They are not like the Allisons in the big machinery, more like a stripped version.

Cummins is no doubt an awesome engine but they had their share of problems after releasing the 6.7. The other thing is their trannys suck and the truck is not the best either.

Nothing like the Ford IMO.

Thing is though the 7.3 has a reliability track record. Something the 6.4 doesnt have. Plus Ford only used them a few years. I am hoping that 6.7 is good for Ford. Still love the old 7.3s though.

There is no doubt the 7.3 has reliability. It will always get you there eventually. It's just that they had that motor for long enough and it needed to be retired as consumers wanted horsepower as well as longevity.

The 6.4 has a good track record. They only had a couple of small issues like bad radiator caps and faulty injectors in a few trucks. If the dpf is removed from the exhaust it will run forever. Some guys are getting real high mileage out of them already.

The 6.4 has a small wrapsheet of problems. They do not fail as much as the 6.0 but when they do its bad just did a 10,000 dollar fuel system replacement for water in the tank. Cab off and on is about 7-8 hours alone at the shop. I work on em. It was the t-stat causing the radiator failure (good luck trying this it sucks but very doable) injectors based on vin number some get none some get 4 some get all 8. Non reusable fuel lines that are a pain to replace unless you remove the cab. But small potatoes compared to the 6.0. Have not seen a 6.7 other than reprogramming. Also egr cooler failure (horizontal. Yes there is two) can cause hydrolock or bent rod if not caught fairly early.

I have heard no bad from the 6.7 but the 6.4 is all the stuff i have seen and done at the dealership i work at. We mainly do commercial trucks mainly diesels. We are only required to work on 450& above but we work on everything. The 6.4 if you can get past horrible fuel mileage or delete the emissions is a good engine. But the ford built 6.7 stomps on it all day long.
