Default Are the 6.0 liters really that bad?

I'm looking at diesel F-250s because I need a workhorse. Everyone is telling me to steer clear of the 6.0s and look at the old 7.3 liters instead. I really want a truck that I can get a couple hundred thousand miles out of (on top of however many miles it has on it when I buy it). I'm only looking at trucks with under 100K miles. Are the 6.0s really that bad, or should I consider one?

They arent too bad, only things on them are the head gasket and the EGR. If you put some ARP head studs and a EGR delete in the 6.0 you'll have yourself a pretty bad truck!

7.3s really dont have any major issues like that, maybe just the Camshaft Positioning Sensor, but they recalled that.

I personally like the 6.0s, if you can find one in your price range, I wouldnt hesitate.

EDIT: Someday I will get one for a race truck... Single cab 4wd auto....

I have an 07 F250 2wd with the 6.0 It has 37,000 miles, and I have never had to do anything except chage the oil and put fuel in it. On the highway without a load, I get 21-22 Mpg, and with a 20 foot race trailer, I get 13-14 on the highway. Around town I get 13 no matter how I drive it. I intend to keep this truck until the wheels fall off.

Now here is my disclaimer: The 6.0 was introduced in mid 2003. The 2003 and 2004 6.0's had a electrical problem communicating with the transmission, and it was supposedly solved with a reprogram of the computer. I have heard that the reprogram worked on some, but not all. I would avoid the 2003-2004 model years.

the best years to get are the 05-06. They are not bad engines. They have the power of the cummins and speed of the duramax. I know a few guys that have 6.0L and they love them to death. And work them everyday. I am looking at 6.0L myself. If you want to read into them from an unbiased sourse check out www.dieselpowermag.com and read there articles on the 6.0L. They did quite a few on the 6.0L over the summer. Head studs and EGR delete will solve any problems you would have if you modify the engine. Stock i dont think you will have many problems.

my army reserve unit has one, its a government GSA truck but we use it to haul small stuff around the state. im not sure what year it is but its a 6.0 with 50,000 miles on it and being a government truck, needless to say it takes a beating and they have had no issues with it. its been stolen twice and came back with some body damage, but runs and drives perfect. i drove it accross the state pulling a generator behind it averaging 85 on the highway, the thing has *****! that truck was a pleasure to drive even being a bare bones standard cab work truck. i wouldnt hesitate to buy one if i needed a deisel.

I had 2, both I owned for over a year or two and both bought used. My 2nd F250 had an electrical issue with an injector but was covered with Ford. Other than that, no leaks, no issues... Loved em...

Working at the dealership, I talk to a lot of guys in service that either have had, or have the 6.0. And most guys say they havent had any problems with them. On the other hand, since Ive worked there, Ive seen 3 trucks come in with the 6.0 with blown heads. 2 out of the 3, bought new trucks, and the other one, just recently, flew back home to texas because his wife was due to have her baby the next day, and then flew back to pick it up a few days later. It can go both ways. Just like any machine.
