4:30 Upgrade on 2017 F350 6.2 worth it?
Hi,
I've got 2017 F350 Lariat 6.2L / 3:73 with 55k in oddly good condition for a vehicle I own. Happy with it, but have little tow experience at this weight\size. I've had it for 15 months and went on 5 or 6 trips towing my TT behind my brother. In no way do I expect to tow as well as him especially when torque is in question. But I am towing about 2/3 of what he is, I'm surprised I got stuck at about 5400-5500 rpm on the way up a long hill in PA behind him. We were going about 48-53mph and I backed down to 39-42, gears shifted and I maintained the slower speed. I was in Tow/Haul mode.
Anybody with a similar experience who has upgraded to 4:30's? I'd do it, but I'm concerned about aftermarket upgrades causing problems and spending time in the shop. If I upgrade, I might keep the truck for a decade. We only drive short distances around town and to tow during summer months. If I don't upgrade, then I'll trade it for something with 4:30's or maybe a 7.3 with 4:30's. LOL - With my lack of experience with different tow vehicles and my trailer, I don't know if I'm being over concerned with my tach on those hills. Maybe I should've pushed a bit harder to get it it shift up?
We both have about the same weight of family in our trucks. Other than his 5vr hitch, we have the same stuff in our beds too.
My F350:
2017 6.2L / 3:73 gears
2018 GD Imagine TT 6300lbs loaded at most
My brother:
2013 Diesel 6.7L / ? gears
2016 5th wheel 10-11k loaded
Thanks for any advice or suggestions.
