2017?? F250/6.2 vs f150 5.0
I've had ford all my life and all of them f-150's. I'm looking at 2 2017s. One a 150 xl stx crew with 5.0 vs 250 xl stx crew with 6.2L. Both are 4x4. I have a tag along camper that's about 25' late 90s all metal and a 18' boat. That's about all I pull. The camper only goes out 4 times a year about 70 miles one way on flat ground. My question is which one? The 250 is around $4000 more in cost. The trucks are almost identical in package except for below.
Pros 250 trailer mirrors, trailer handling cons poor center console, cup holders, no rear ac ducts, I'm not sure about around town mileage???? f150 pros/cons exactly opposite!!!!!!!!!!! currently I have a 06 f150 crew with 5.4 and 74,000 miles and it pulls the camper ok but braking worries me. |
IMHO, one of the biggest factors you should consider (because of complaints I read about all the time) is ride quality. My F350 SRW (same as the F250 with an extra helper spring) takes LT tires that are aired up to 80 psi on back and 65 on front. This means it feels like you're driving on bricks. You will feel every crack in the road and your tires will leave the pavement on the normal highway bumps we have in my area.
If you care about ride quality, don't go with the Superduty... keep to your nice streetable F150. Now, if you have grown up with heavy-duty trucks, don't care about it riding like a 2 ton wheat truck, don't have back problems, or want it to be capable of anything you throw at it, then by all means, get the super-duty... you won't be disappointed. |
5.0 isnt a great pulling motor. ottles of power once you are over 3K rpm, but until then its rough.
but if its just a couple excursions a year, I think youll enjoy the ride and fuel mileage of the 5.0 over the 6.2 SD. Best case senario is pretty much 15-16mpg unloaded with a 6.2. 5.0 is more like 20-22mpg highway if not better at 55 |
You need to calculate the payload of your camping trips and compare that number to the F150 you are considering.

It's going to boil down to what you want, the F150 with the 5.0 will do what you need but the F250 will do it easier at the cost of around 4 mpg and if you want a better ride out of the F250, you will have to spend a little time on the rear tire pressures when empty, I'm running mine at 42 psi empty.

Thanks for all the replies. I priced the 250 today I camp near the beach so I went with the XL with the STX package. That way I can get the rubberized flooring. That package with 4x4 and super crew and a flew adds like sync camera trailer brake and bed lighting should make me a good truck for years to come.

You can delete the carpet in higher trim levels than STX.

I had a 16' DRW f350 with the 6.2 and the gas mileage was 8-9 unloaded and it was a turd, my f150 5.0 tows the same rv trailer better. But to play devils advocate I just got a 17' with the 6.7l powerstroke for work, its a beast. |

I never said the 5.0 didnt have to rev, I said if towing under 6k I would get the 5.0. Actually a f350 drw and a 250 srw 4x4 are similar weight, so they really arent that different and why I used that comparison. Our company has 50+ srw/drw f250 and 350's with 6.2l and they all get 11ish mpg.
