Default North Carolina Safety and emissions testing

I will be moving to NC as soon as the house sells, (hopefully fast). I see that my 1986 will not under go a emissions test.

Can I upgrade my truck to headers and a real carb and still be legal?

The I6 is a great engine in my truck, and I have been told that dual exhaust and a better carb, 2BBL or small 4BBL will really wake this engine up nicely.

Thanks ahead of time.

Anything after 1975 has to have a CAT or its illegal(federal). If they are not testing emissions and you are not putting an engine too big for the vehicle class in it I assume anything goes. Then again you know what assuming does.

In most jurisdictions vehicles produced before 1987 (when EFI became standard on Fords) are being phased out of the emissions testing program, more due to the impracticality of testing them and the lack of real good emissions standards for those vehicles.
But even though you don't have to take it for a test it is generally illegal (as in "a crime") to remove any of the emissions control components from your vehicle (unless they're being replaced with something equal to or better than what it originally came with kind of thing).
95% of the time nobody is even going to look but if you get the wrong official when he's having a bad day and he says "open the hood", you are screwed without a leg to stand on.
Huge fine, pull the plates, tow truck.
Likely to happen ? No. Possible ? Yes

Legal...no. Found out...highly doubtful. If mine, I would wait until the truck is registered in N.C. then do the mods. My 84 has no emissions and runs Historical Vehicle plates which are a one time fee and never have to be renewed in Ohio.

It looks as though the antique vehicle registration in N.C. is different.
