Help needed! 1982 F150 XL 4WD Not properly engaging
Hi everybody, thanks for taking the time to help. A 1982 F150 XL of a friend of mine that I am helping work on has been having 4WD Issues. The truck drives just fine in 2 High, but when we shift it into 4 High, it sounds like the gears are grinding slightly, and the truck feels weirdly jerky and torquey. No matter what we try, it will not shift into 4 Low. I have a feeling it might be a problem in the transfer case, and I've seen some of that online, but I haven't seen much. I haven't worked on 4WD parts a lot before, and we're replacing a lot of the old engine parts now so I figured I'd try and find a real solution before diving into it. Any thoughts? Questions welcome as well.

It will be jerky if you are on dry pavement.
On my '86 I must stop the engine to get into 4LO without grinding.
If that does not work then something is seriously wrong with the T case.

What type of driving surface are you on when it is "jerky"? What type of lockout hubs do you have? Sounds to me like you're driving it on dry pavement or some other surface that you shouldn't be engaging 4x4 on. Explains the grind and the jerk.
