I guess Ford motor company has me confused. They are telling me that a properly equipped Ford f150 short box can tow 13,200#. It seems that a 8000# fw that has a workable pin weight that is within range would be a easy job for the properly equipped F150. Why have a 13,200# rating if you can only pull less than half of that, as you fellas are saying?

We fellas are talking about pre-'87 trucks, as indicated by the title of this forum. Scroll to the top of the page & look. If you're talking about something else, put your truck's details into your signature, as this caption explains:

The maximum gross weight of your truck will be one thing (GVW). Maximum trailer weight will be another. Combined gross vehicle weight CGVW is another number again.
GVW is the maximum amount of weight that can be sitting on your truck's tires; you'll see on your door sticker that that weight is divided up between how much can be on the front tires and how much can be on the rear.
Maximum trailer weight is the heaviest trailer you can tow.
CGVW is the maximum amount of weight that the entire combination of truck and trailer can weigh.
I would suspect that in your case 13,200 is the CGVW.
8000 would likely be the allowable trailer weight that you can pull.

Those numbers vary with year, model, options, gears, transmission type etc. but the concept remains the same whether it's for a '68 or a 2018. Every truck will have a rating; that's what you can legally tow/haul with that particular truck.

You stated "easy to work on", well the easiest is the 6 cyl, they are great engines.
Buying a 70's vintage truck, you will find yourself into the engine unless you buy an already rebuilt engine and tranny.
