85 f150 302 only runs if distributor is fully retarded

I just replaced ignition coil and spark plug wires and now it idles rough and dies, when I used a timing light it was 30 degrees off and the truck will only run if it is turned clockwise as far as it will go

Start by checking that you have the wires coming off the distributor to the correct spark plugs.

Definitely have the wires going to the right plugs, the truck runs but will randomly die and runs rough when I put it in gear

It is a vacuum advanded distributor right?.

it really sounds like you have the plugs offset, each plug is 45 deg apart and it should be 8-10 btdc which puts you really close to that 30 deg and explains why it runs so bad
