Default coil always warm?

I am having issues with my truck, the first one is that my coil, even when there is no key in the ignition is always warm! i know that means there is resistance but, how do i find it? does this mean i have a bad ground?

The quick story of how i got to this point..... I just swapped in a 351W from a 1987 bronco into a 1977 f150, transferred the coil, and ignition module over to the f150 from the bronco. Also, when it did run for the few minutes it did, it would backfire horribly bad! it was very bad. I was wondering if the fact that i have open headers at the moment due to not finishing the exhaust just yet could contribute to this? As of now, the truck absolutely will not start. Just cranks over and does nothing, and i am getting fuel. help!

check your grounds.
engine to chassis
check coil in it's bracket could be grounding there
check your ground from alternator to block.

Default NonStart

Have you checked things like: spark present, timing correct, etc? The fact you had backfiring sounds like your timing may be off. If it's all right, do you have a ballast resistor in the wiring? Fusibile link? Have you checked to confirm it's ok? Is there a computer module involved here? If so, are you using the one for the engine or for the truck?

You might have multiple issues going on.
From these diagrams which system do you have?

Note the ballast resistor is a piece of special wire up in the dash.

Your ignition module and/or the TFI in the distributor could be cooked. The module is supposed to turn the coil on and off by grounding the coil wire. If stuck on then the coil will warm up some.

Could also have the timing way off and/or spark plug wires mis-wired, or other wiring problems.

I have more detailed diagrams. Tell me if it's the Duraspark II or EEC IV.

I have the duraspark II system, and I am using all the wiring out of the 1977 f150 but I am using the distributor, and the ECM from the bronco, The alternator i am using is from the f150.

Also I had mixed my 2 and 3 plug wires and switched them back and all is good for the firing order, timing is definitely off but i dont know how much and i will time it tomorrow. I think the only issue now i have is the warm coil

Here is more info on the Duraspark II:

I would compare everything in the schematic. Note that these pages are for an '86 but I don't think much has changed.

Note that the diagram shows only the START and RUN part of the ignition switch.
In OFF or accessory position the 12VDC power will be disconnected from the coil and module.
