Default 82 F150 taking 2-5 minutes to shift into drive?

Hey y'all, the last couple of days my 82 F150 has been taking 2-5 and one time almost 10 minutes to shift into drive. It goes into reverse just fine every time but not drive. I checked my transmission fluid and it looks fine. Any ideas as to what's causing this?

Yep, had same issue on my 1986 F150 with the C6 transmission. There are seals, gaskets, and o-rings inside the transmission that harden and become brittle over time. This causes them to no longer hold any hydraulic pressure. Once the transmission fluid heats up a little bit the seals swell/soften enough to hold pressure. You need to rebuild your transmission and replace all the seals, gaskets, and o-rings.

I don't know what you have for engine, but the if it is an automatic transmission, c6, then most likely you either need to replace the vacuum modulator on the outside rear of the tranny, or you have a leak in the vacuum line going to the tranny, or the check ball came out of the modulator and is lodged in the hose, or the intermediate hose connector on the firewall. Take off the vacuum line at the modulator with engine running, and with a vacuum tester, take a reading. Then connect the hose back. Now, at the engine with it still running, take off any of the one vacuum lines running directly from the engine vacuum, and take a reading. If the reading from the modulator is lower, then you have a leak in the lines running from the firewall to the modulator. If they are the same, then you probably need a new modulator. If there is no vacuum at the modulator, then the check ball is most likely lodged in the line as mentioned above. Good luck with er.

If it is seals, sometimes an additive seal conditioner can either briefly or greatly extend trans life, I've seen both happen. Can help for someone needing time to buy a new trans.
