Default 86 Ford f -150 won't start....

86 f-150 won't start .. It has a 302 F I - I started it and ran for about 1 min then just died. It'll crank but will not start now. It is getting fuel and spark-I know this because of fuel smell and spark from using a timing light. Replaced the I.C.M -cap and rotor. out of ideas . took out plugs and all were wet and were in good shape. Just a note -the electrical in the distributor was replaced about 2 yrs ago.

if you wanna throw parts at it my guess is the coil, otherwise start trouble shooting, check spark on all plugs for proper color, fuel pump pressure, and maybe spray some cleaner down the carb, check all ur vacuum

Check fuel filter, remove and blow through it. You should be able to blow through easily. if you get anything other than gas, you may have contaminated fuel from your gas station. or from your own deteriorating tank. My 94 tank had a huge amount of rust from years of water containated gas. I had to replace tank and fuel filter and blow out the fuel line from tank to filter

The fuel filter is a great suggestion as a starting point. On the spark plugs , i always do it after dark and hold the plug wire to the exhaust manifold and some one cranks and i either see a spark in the dark or i don't, this gives you a better look at the spark when it's dark.

Ok- here is what I have found out . While checking on the timing -I found out that I was having a 15 degree difference TDC and the movement of rotor when I would turn the crank backwards. Decided to tear down to timing chain and found that the cam timing sprocket teeth wore down to almost nothing. Now - my question is , The crank sprocket is TDC but the cam is off 90 degrees - can I turn the cam to the position where the timing marks meet ? Is there enough clearance between the piston and valves that there isn't any damage ? Would like to know before dumping more money into this engine.

Crank dot at the top, cam dot on the bottom, lined up with each other.
You can do a little double checking research on that to be sure but I'm 100% on that one.

from experience I can tell you its either the coil or the distributor

the sprockets arent the same size, you have to turn the crank to line them up correctly in the manner that chris mentioned. definitely replace the worn sprocket, and might as well do the chain while your there. it doesnt matter if the timing light says your getting spark just because it fires off correctly. if your not getting strong enough spark it wont fire, pull a plug and ground it to the block while still attached to the distributor and in the dark turn the engine over, it should fire a nice blue, if it's orange/reddish then your not getting good spark and it's your coil or distributor. only other thing that i would check is the IAC, make sure it's not stuck shut.

I use a booster cable to ground the plug - it's kinda handy
