I haven't tried to locate the problem yet. For the past few months it was saying full when really its at half tank and when it was really empty it said half but as of today it just shows empty and not even moving.
I'm thinking the sensor is in the tank and the tank has to be dropped to replace?
As I said I have not started my research yet. I posted here first.

Everything else is working ok. only a single tank.

Chances are it is your sending unit in the tank....

Thought as much. when I get time I'll look into it.
Do I have to use the original part? I'll try to look for what's available

Does your gauge swing up beyond full to it mechanical limit?. The sender is just a variable resistor. I have a sender in my truck which has a dead spot between 3/4- 7/8. The gauge will swing up and peg out beyond full when I get to this spot. Go either side of tank volume, the gauge works perfectly. If that's your case, you will have to drop the tank. On a 85, you might want to locate a replacement first before dropping the tank. The sender may have been long discontinued.

You can always try your local auto parts, but I would remove the original to take with you.
Also, you may be able to extract the part number off the one you have;
