Slamdit, I just completed this swap. if you have ANY questions send me a PM and ill do my best to get back to you, I know all about it.

Everyone has shown you the right way so far, you need the motor mounts, the bellhousing, and thats pretty much it. just be sure to hook up the ignition properly.

Default extra info

I had a 79 bronco with a 351m and when it was due for a rebuild my builder suggested a 400 crank. It dropped right in for $50 cdn.(that's about $30 us lol) i gained fifty cubic inches by lengthening the stroke and great bottom end.It never got great mileage but i had the 4spd and 205 with the 4.11's.It ran great with 35's.Just food for thought.

Thanx,

I think you'll have to have the oil pan from a 4x4 351w to allow
clearance for the front axle. With a lift kit you may get around that,
but,idk.

I am looking at what it would take to put a windsor in it as all my ford buddies say it is very reliable motor. This truck is primarily a driver.

This brings me to my main question.... How involved is this swap?
I know I can put another M in it but this Windsor was always taken great care of and is in perfect shape. I looked into the 460 but it seems like alot of time will be spent chasing parts to get everything in and working.

thanx again,

Sean
Hello & welcome aboard. Regarding the 351m/400m series engines, my opinion they're dogs. The main bearing saddle oil hole is too large, which when wear occurs (60,000 miles or so), excess oil pressure is lost and the rod bearings starve for oil. A threaded restrictor usually rectifies the problem during a rebuild. Also, the design of the cylinder heads work best with higher compression ratios & a more stout cam profile, a tough thing given pump gas & emissions regulations.

Anyhow, back to the swap. I swapped my knocking 351m for a 429 (same physically as a 460) from a 1969 T-bird. It was a simple swap, bellhousing & engine mounts mated perfectly. I used the 429 oil pan as well, though my 74 F100 was a 2wd. Only change, I upgraded to a larger capacity radiator. Looking back, I would have changed the rear gears from a 3:55 to a 3:31 or 3:08, or possibly an OD tranny to get better mileage.

Regarding street performance for most situations, except heavy hauling, I'd go with a 351W as well. My favorite Ford truck engine is the 390 FE.

when I did the swap from the 300/6 to the 351W I moved the motor mount purge back and bolted it to the shock mount bolts and the motor didn't fit so what am I doing wrong

Doing a 77 F150 4x4 390 ci 4 speed to a 351W 5 speed out of a 86 F150 into the 77....did you figure out the engine mount issue??
