That handle is wayyyy off from where it's supposed to be. Replace the latch system.
Handle should be straight out the left side of the latch. It shouldn't be anywhere near sticking out of the grill. That's bent almost 180 degrees from where its supposed to be.
They can become a little tough to open, but shouldn't require a skin and blood donation. Replace it and keep it lubed. Mine is original to 1979 and opens with ease.
