4x4 selector, 78 F150

Hi folks. I have a '78 F150 4x4 with the 400 engine. I don't suppose anyone with the same truck can post a picture or describe what the 4x4 selector knob should look like? I can't help feel this has the wrong one

I dont have a picture. But thats not what the one in my 79 looked like. That looks more like an international pick up or scout knob. Im guessing your asking because you dont have the notches in your lever travel?

It just doesn't strike me as being right unless you guys have different definitions on 4x4 systems (I'm Scottish, and got the truck shipped over from California)
I would expect something like 2H, N, 4H, 4L.
The fact that the knob says lock when it doesn't have a diff lock makes me think it ain't right either.
It does appear to have the detents in lever travel but it's hard to tell as it doesn't feel like it's engaging in to one. It does have a full range of movement though, and when my back axle shaft came adrift when the bearing **** itself, I was able to engage 4x4 to get myself home so I know that the transfer is providing drive to front and back

Youll need to get under the truck and see what the tag on the transfer case says. Also does the truck have the manual locking hubs on front rear end?

You should be able to figure it out 2h front axles looking at knuckle u joint should not be turning also that's hubs unlocked ,then just by gearing 4l should be a lot lower than 4h just by feel

Could of been the full time 4wd system

all the way forward is 4 low pull back 1notch N then ,2h,4h

I did come accross one truck that i bought for parts a few years back that had a full time trasfer case in it. But i did not have a neutral in it just a high and low and that was all that was on the knob.

It's a bit of a project truck and haven't got round to a lot of things, but the front axle does have manual locking hubs. I'll maybe check the transfer case but I'm certain it's the part time transfer. It's not that big a deal but I'd like to just make it original. I know where to put the lever for use - was just thrown off by the unusual selector knob not tying up with what was going on, and the lack of difflock even though a light comes on saying lock when pushed to that position

Yea the best bet is to see what transfer case it is. The lockable hub dont really have any bearing on that. Its most likely a NP208. And some one put that knob on.
