Default Need replacement engine for '78 4x4 400M

It's time to rebuild the 400M. However, as I have heard that this engine is about as good as a "boat anchor", I would like to see what other Ford engine will bolt up to the C6. I'd hate to put money into the 400 when something better is out there.
I don't want more hourse power as this will just be a truck for the daughter to get to school in and when she graduates from HS, it will go to my son.

If possible, a long block would be easier, if the price is right.

TIA,,
Al

360, 390 are good choices as well. They bolt up to the C6

I am sorry to say the 360 is a absolute dog. The head design is really bad, the 390 is an excellent engine but they are getting hard to find and there are thousands of 460's out there lurking in Lincoln Town cars that nobody wants.
