1986 F-150 shifting problems
Hello, I have a 1986 F-150, single cab LWB with the 302 v8 automatic. It has 146k miles, yet still runs fine. Recently, I've noticed some problems when it shifts and loses power between 40-50 mph. It's done this at lower speeds, but mostly in that area. When this happens, it feels as though it's running on half the cylinders. My father-in-law thought it might be a modulator. Has anyone else experienced this issue or have an idea what might be wrong? The only reason I'm posting this is to see if it's something I can fix myself or if I'm going to have to put it in the shop. If it's a quick fix like spark plugs or something like that, I'd rather do it myself.

For $15.00 bucks the modualtor replace wont brake the bank and you can do it your self very easy and it does control shift points so maybe. Father inlaw may be right can't hurt with a 28 year old truck right
. My 1982 F-150 302 auto shifts a little to quick at 8 to 10 miles an hour into second and the modulator did the trick as well as a leak in the vacuum hose that really caused it so replace both both for under $20.00 fix.

Thanks half ton. Since posting, I've changed my plugs and plug wires. That helped out ALOT! In fact, I haven't noticed any power loss since I did that. I might try to put a new modulator in it as well. I'm planning on keeping this truck as long as I can. I just can't afford to replace the engine or transmission anytime soon.
That's cool . I recently found my 1982 F-150 4x4 and i really love the truck as well because you don't have to have a degree to open the hood you can actually work on it and fix it . Nice feeling when you are done.
