But this is one of the rare cases in which I'll say that the original wiring is NOT the best, or even necessary. That 1-bbl feedback carb was a catastrophe when new, and doesn't work any better than (if AS WELL as) the non-feedback version.

Agreed. The first chance I get its coming off for a 4 BBL carb and an HEI with dual exhaust. That way the damn thing can breathe!!!

I had a similar experience on an 85 with the straight 6 a month or so back, you might find these helpful!

There's quite a few images, some have slightly different wires listed/going to different places, I remember having to figure out which was the correct one for my engine. These were the ones I found to be the most useful, I have a couple others I rounded up when searching for these diagrams but they were less helpful. PM me if there's anything I can help out with!

It's a straight 6 built for stationary equipment - not a nitromethane V8. 1 bbl is plenty big enough for it to do all it can. If you want an actual improvement, swap to a 4.9L EFI (WITH all the accessories & emissions). That's what I did 25 years ago when my carb washed the rings out for the 3rd time. My EFI now has north of 860Kmi without a rebuild, and it still runs like new.
