Default 1984 Tachometer issue

I have a 84' with factory instrument package that includes tachometer. The tach quit working a few years back and I never looked into it. Then recently I had the steering column rebuilt and when I got it back from the shop I was surprised to see the tach working again. After a couple of months it got where the starter wouldn't engage when turning the key switch on the steering column to the crank position, so the guy that rebuilt the column said it was an adjustment and came to the house and made an adjustment on something at the lower end of the steering column that got my starter engaging again, but after he did that, the tachometer no longer worked. Is there a ground wire or some other electrical connector for the tach in or near the lower end of the steering column that is coming loose or not making contact ? Just curious, I am in the process of fixing up the truck and would like to have the tach working if possible.

No, the tach wiring is embedded in the dash harness. But those old tachs are known to stop & restart working with bumps. Try a gentle whack on the dash; if that doesn't work, try one not-so-gentle.
