1984 F-150 351W carburetor
 

Hello I am new here. I just bought an 1984 F-150 with a 351 Windsor and a 4 speed transmission. I have put quite a bit into it and have gotten it running pretty good. The only thing I have noticed lately is sometimes it will act like it's flooding out or getting choked while you're driving it. I am thinking about pulling it off and rebuilding the carb but my father-in-law has a 2 barrel carb that's all manual. So my question is would it be easier to install a vacuum advance distributor, delete all the emissions on it and make it all manually controlled? Or would it be easier to rebuild the one I have and see what happens. The previous owner has taken the belt off the air pump and it's bad anyways. I'm just not sure what the easier route would be?

I have almost the same truck, 84 SuperCab 351 HO with the Holly 4V carburetor. That air pump on mine went out in the 80's so I've been driving it with that belt off and no other modifications for more than 20 years with no problem other than putting a gasket kit in the carb once a long time ago, and replacing the accelerator pump diaphragm recently.

I have a '85, my air pump still works (for now). All I have done to the carb is put a rebuild kit in because the gaskets started leaking.

You say it acts like it's flooding or choked while driving. Can you be more specific? Does it die when you are coasting around a corner (float issue)? Maybe it tries to die when you accelerate (indicating accelerator pump adjustment issue)? Does it do it only when the temperature outside is cold (indicates old vacuum lines)? Hot (indicates vapor lock/vacuum switch issue)?
