Can I put a split grille from a 1977 or 1978 on a 1976? If so, does it require a lot of modifications?

Found a description of a similar project here, but I still need to know specifically what it takes to swap the 77 or 78 shell/inserts onto the 76.

Yes you should be able to fairly easily. IIRC you may have to drill an extra mounting hole for the grill inserts but I can't remember if that's going from a 76 to a 78 grill or vice versus. Short answer yes, very easy

 

78 didn't have a split grill. 78 and 79 were the one piece.
