Why I decided on 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 instead of 2022 F150

That's a good looking truck.

Lots of guys at work are having corrosion issues with their not so old half ton Sierras and Silverados. Krown rust proofing would not be a bad investment for your Sierra.

Starting it from a distance whilst approaching it made a difference though, I find myself still doing that with the new F-150.
I had the 5.3 with the 10 spd....it shifted as well as the F150 does...probably a little smoother. The F150 when in part throttle low speed and the cyl deactivation kicks in, it doesn't shift smooth sometimes.

You would not want the 8 spd! It was a nightmare. Sometimes I'd leave for work at 4 in the morning and the HOA sent me a letter saying others were complaining about me "peeling off" the asphalt.... That's how bad it was. Never had that issue with any of the other trucks.. so out of habit, I started warming it up with the remote start while approaching it. Made things a lot better. Strangely, the 8 speed was reliable.. but it sure didn't feel like it.

I own a 2018 F150 still, needed another 1/2 ton for the house. I was looking to get the 2022 F150 but I decided to expand my search into other manufacturers. One of the main reasons I picked the 2018 Ford was because they were way ahead on tech and their console gear shifter, as I think the column shifters should be reserved for work vehicles.

I ruled out the Tundra and Silverado because of their looks. I looked at the 2022 Refreshed Sierra and liked it right away. The headlights look kind of similar to the new F150s which isn't a bad thing. Although I like the look of the GMC more than the new F150. And for the first time GMC moved the gear shifter from the steering column to the console. Apparently it is the same shifter as the Hummer EV, but doesn't stow away like the F150, which is ok.

Along with that GMC is also using Google's operating system in their infotainment instead of making their own system. I've always said that car manufacturers should leave the software to the software companies. Although the system does have a few kinks in it, its not perfect but no system ever is. And another thing I liked was the heads up display. I love this, I wish it had more display options but it really good to have a huge speed display int he windshield. The HUD size is 15inchs. I was hoping Ford would have added something like this, but I'm sure its coming.

As for the towing and all other pick-up truck functionality, both trucks would easily fulfil my needs. So it basically ended up being those things that I considered to be important enough to switch to GMC. I also felt the GM had more of a presence when next to the F150. I had also never owned a GMC before so I thought I should give it a shot. I'm not a "Fan" of any specific manufacturer; I'll go to anyone who has what I need.

I have been happy with my local ford dealership so far. And the GM dealership also has a good history, so I'm glad the two dealerships closest to me are easy to deal with and do good work. I've driven 10,000km so far on the GM and no issues.

I had kept my 2018 F150 to trade in for the Raptor R, but that isn't going to happen since the dealerships want $50,000 above MSRP. Not about pay $200K CAD for a half ton truck. I chose the V8 6.2L in the GMC. It's terrible on gas so far but sounds good.

I'm looking forward to the F150's refresh in a few years, maybe that's when I trade in my F150 for a newer one.

Some Pics:

That is just a gorgeous truck man... I shopped the Sierra too and really liked it. I was going to go with the 3.0 Duramax and was actually quite excited about it. Found the truck I wanted.... and the dealer was adding an "allocation fee" on top of MSRP and the usual dealership BS markups and add-ons. I stopped by the Ford dealer and he was selling me at straight MSRP during the middle of COVID when all the greedy dealers were adding these "allocation fees". I bought the Ford, and I won't shop for Kia (SUV) or GMC, Chevy or Toyota (trucks) ever again. They got bailout money and then have the gall to gouge us on self-made inventory problems. I hope they go out of business.

But that is still a gorgeous truck.

That...that is seriously nearly if not actually a deal breaker. I mean. Geez.
23 gallon?????

Towing at say 12 mpg, with my 100 mile minimum range safety margin left, gives you sub 180 mile range. That's atrocious.

Without a trailer GMC on the highway claims 20, for 330 miles with safety.

I'm sorry but the 36 gallon tank spoils me.

GMC has always had better looks than the Chevy since around the year 2000 or so anyways.

I've owned way more GM's than Fords over the years, and three Dodges. Depending on the year, all of them had their pros and cons. So I am not really a brand loyal guy.
In 2021, I was looking at lower tier trim trucks. What kept me in the Ford was basically standard options including sync 4, interior and exterior looks. And when I looked at GM's, every base truck on the lot had their 2.7 4 cylinder turbo engine, of which I didnt want.
Base interior, the GM was terrible. The Ford base vinyl interior is more comfortable than one would expect, and easier on the eyes.
I would have been interested in their 4.3L v6 but every dealer pushed their 2.7 turbo. I was more interested in tried and true, the 3.3L has been around and at the time the GM 2.7 turbo is new.

On another note, two of my friends have GMC 1500's. Both of them have the 5.3 and they dont like them. I dont know why as my father had a Silverado 1500 with a 5.3 Ecotec and I thought it drove fine.
I personally wouldnt want any engine in a daily driver truck that requires 91 octane min.

Valid point. I had a '17 Silverado 6.2. Having to fill up every 325 around town was bearable; towing required a fuel stop every 160-170 miles. At least now I can go close to 300 towing; and I routinely go 475-500 around town.

Funny that you also noticed the dealers were carrying the 2.7 on the lots - I test drove one just to check it out, and was actually surprised how well it did particularly around town. The I purposefully hit a large grade and watched it hunt for gears all the way up the hill. That was empty with just 2 people in the cab - I can only imagine how bad those do when they're towing something - no chance I would buy a truck with that powertrain in it.
