Why I decided on 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 instead of 2022 F150

Ford does not sell the Lobo (that's what it's called in Mexico) with the 6.5-ft bed so I was forced to get a Cheyenne RST 4×4. I camp a lot and I'd want more than 60 cubic feet of storage. Ford's 5.5-ft holds 53 while the Cheyenne RST 4×4's 5.8-ft holds 63. Ford's 6.5-ft bed also holds 63 which is the same as Silverado's 5.8-ft bed.

Now that I have moved back to the U.S., I went back to the Ford F-150.

So.. for some, it's either a larger fuel tank or a larger bed. The smaller tank on the Cheyenne didn't bother me because I was able to squeeze 650 miles out of a 23-gallon tank despite having a 5.3 V8 engine. If I could not do that, I would have not bought it.

The small GM tank has nothing to do with lack of room for more capacity. There is room. I’m sure there are several reasons, but research shows the small tank capacity has more to do with how the final posted MPG ratings are calculated, and how that extra fuel weight impacts that. Not sure how Ford and Ram get through it and GM doesn’t, but there it is.

As for you getting 650 miles of range out of a 23 gallon tank with the GM 5.3 V8, are you sure about that?

I just watched some videos on the "refreshed" GMC trucks. The interior has definitely improved. I have to say that it's disappointing to me that you still can't get a panoramic roof on even their top trim level of these trucks. Hell, my 2016 Lariat had a panoramic roof. Here is hoping that Ford can figure out how to add a rearview backup camera. For me, that is far more functional than a camera looking into the bed of my truck.

GM has always had the small 23 or 26-gallon tank on their 1/2 tons going all the way back to the early 2000s. They've never offered anything bigger. Doesn't have anything to do with the bed size.

Did you get the Raptor R?

I'm getting around 17-18mpg with my larger and heavier tires. Stock tires weigh about 80lb and these larger wheels and tires weigh about 106lb. So roughly 30lb of additional rotation weight per wheel.

I read, since 2022 is only a refresh, they couldn't offer a pano roof because that would require a redesign. So I'm guessing next gens might offer the pano roof if they redesign the whole body.

Nope. The R's are not being produced yet....and very few will be made...and the cost will take it way beyond what I am willing to pay. Besides, V8's are nothing special (to me) and 450hp is more than enough for my use..

I normally get 450 miles while I'm here in California, but on very long highway trips down to Hermosillo in Sonora, I can get 650. That's without stopping anywhere to pee, eat, etc. No braking at all whatsoever. Driving in the early hours. The speed limit is 80 km/h or about 45 mph in a lot of areas of BC and Sonora so it's easy to get a lot of miles out of it. My record was 1,100 kms or 680 miles with 80 liters or 21 gallons (three to go).

I didn't know that was the case. I only know the bed size in Chevrolet of 2019 was bigger than Ford and I had to go for it. I assumed the smaller tank size was a trade off. I never drove the Chevrolet before 2019 so my apologies for making an assumption that's not true.

When I fill up my F150, I love seeing 1000km+ till empty.

When I trade my F150 in for a refreshed model, I'll be glad to return to a sensible fuel tank size.

I really was impressed with the new GMC Sierra 1500 exterior and interior redesign, but that small gas tank for a 6.2 V8 lost my purchase. Also, the SLT wheels could be a better design. I have an F-150 Lariat on order now.

I got an offer too good to refuse on my at4 last year. I thought it was leaps better than my current 18 3.5 lariat and that was the model before all these improvements. My at4 ran better, shifted smoother, and my 6.2 beat my 3.5 in mpg. I absolutely love my 36 gallon tank and my seats are pretty comfort, so I am still happy. If I was buying brand new I’d go right back to an at4 tho

I regretted not getting the 6.2 with the 10 speed.. I had the 5.3 with the 8 speed, it was horrible, the delayed shift from P to D had my tires spinning a few times, especially from cold starts, then there's the violent shift from 1st to 3rd or whatever. Starting it from a distance whilst approaching it made a difference though, I find myself still doing that with the new F-150.
