My 25 Lariat came with the "new style". Luckily, I still had my 15 Lariat. Swapped out the plates with no issues. Can still use the bed divider out of the 15, and the "handle" tie down points.

I do not carry heavy loads typically, I have never used the lower bed tie down points they hide behind the plastic bedliner caps. I use multiple e-track items for hauling things, but have never used the factory cleats for anything. I built a bicycle holder to hold my bike up that clips into the front and rear E-track points. My wifes recumbent trike and my bike fit in the bed because I did not get the short box. I put the corner top rail post caps in with the recessing tie down hooks that I use often for things. When I travel for gun demos I put the guns and ammo in the box of the truck and roll the velcro tonneau and latch it down, then I put a couple of 6' folding tables on top of the tonneau and criss cross some ratchet straps across the box upper rail tie downs to secure this and ladders have traveled just fine over the road.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the package, like the bed utility

Yup Ford changed the style. Personally, the aftermarket makes better stuff

I found a set of the cleats under the seat of the 2018 XLT I bought last November, Is there a trick to install the damn things? Can't seem to get them to slide into position.

I had to unbolt the plate then put the cleats in and bolt back the plate, if you have spray in bed liner there isn’t much clearance.

One of my previous F 150’s ( I think it was my ‘17 ) that came with the boxlink cleats was a real pain in the buns to install the cleat.
I ended up taking a hammer and an a piece of oak to persuade them.

Took a lot of persuasion !
Whoever owns that truck now has permanently installed bed cleats……

Success, I just got the cleats mounted. I took my Dremel with a drum sander and dressed the backs of them and tapped them in with a dead blow hammer!
