What Motor Should You Buy in an 2018 -2019 F150 ?

I've been driving a 2018 2.7l Eco for almost a week while my 17 3.5l Eco is getting some scratches fixed by the dealer. Both mine and this one have the 3.55 gears and are crew cabs. I have to say that I'm pretty impressed with it. It cruises around great and runs really well in sport mode. For a large segment of the public that only uses their truck to haul some mulch or pull a small trailer, it would work perfect.

Mark I’m comparing both 2018’s. I’m a big fan of the 2.7 and have it in another vehicle. But while it was in the shop I had a rental truck. Bare bones XLT no options. Didn’t even have a hitch. So it was pretty light compared to my 2018 502a with moonroof 5.0. And bottom end it just didn’t have the power that my 5.0 has. Once spooled up it was great. But taking off or cruising around in 10th it was like the pedal was dead. No one was home until 2400+ rpm or so. By 3000 I was impressed for sure. Moreso then my 5.0. Then it would taper off after 5000 rpm where as the 5.0 just keeps pulling.
Just my observations. Not bashing. I’ve had 2 2.7 ecoboost vehicles so far. Big fan of them. Haven’t had any issues with the engine at all. And maybe something was wrong with the rental truck I had... but using it for a few weeks while our car was in the shop... I couldn’t wait to get my truck back from the wifey.

I agree with you there. Lazy is the way it seemed to be. It did return some really decent fuel economy though. I just wish that it had more grunt down low rather then nothing, nothing, nothing then a big wallop of torque when you didn’t want that much. The 5.0 in my case I find to be a lot smoother for power delivery. But it can still be laggy. That is fixed quite a bit with a tune like the omega tune. I had it on my last truck but I haven’t gotten around to getting it for the new truck.

Yea I’m not sure Mark. No check engine lights or anything. It drove fine, had really good fuel economy, but spool up time was pretty bad on it I found. Not what I’ve seen in our other 2.7’s. It took forever to get a good burnout going. But when it spooled up it was great.

3 different F-150 motors owner
I had a 08 Screw 4.6L V8, 2010 Screw 5.4L Triton V8, and current 2018 Screw 2.7 Eco and this motored F-150 is the most fun but I haven’t towed anything heavy because I have not had a reason to. I sometimes miss the V8 rumble, but this lil 2.7L can really scoot especially in sport mode with 91 and 93 octane. After a few seconds I realize I have to let off the throttle or I will get pulled over for speeding. Averaging around 18 mpg in the city while the 5.4L was around 14 mpg or so. Just my experience so far.

Here is a great video that was just uploaded. Clearly you can see the weakness of the 5.0 out of the hole, just low on torque.Man does it sound amazing though! If you are not supercharging the 5.0 it’s pretty clear which engine to get for performance.....

2.7L against the 3.5L race
The guy in the 2.7L kinda fell asleep at the start so he definitely was not going to catch the 3.5L. Also I think he might have been a little closer with an aftermarket intake (since the 3.5L had one) and maybe even both drivers being in sport mode. I know the 3.5 would still have one but those 3 differences might have made it a little tighter race IMO.
