the problem is I would have to pay to have the x4 unlocked. If I flashed the truck back to stock and then reflashed the existing hptune file, my understanding is that there would be credits to pay for and then also a charge from the ngauge folks themselves. So then in essence I would have to pay to unlock the x4 or sink more money into reloading the hptune already have, in addition to buying an Ngauge. I guess the bonus is I could make some minor changes, but I guess I'll just keep logging as is and haul the laptop with me and depend on Matt to make the adjustments for me. Kind of cumbersome, but oh well.

Your tuner already spent credits on you, as long as he is the one altering/ adjusting your tune. no more credits needed to be spent.
The ngauge is just hardware, no credits to be spent on it.
In order to use it with your hptuners files, your tuner coverts your tune to a .enc file and thats what the ngauge flashes.
The ngauge has 5 unlocks also.

it's not the number of unlocks on the x4 that's the issue. It still says 5 unlocks on it. It's that they didn't flash the truck back to stock before they started with the hptuners stuff. Maybe I'm not understanding everything, but I think sct can unmarry it for a charge...too much however to make it worth trying to pass on to someone else.
Matt said that reflashing it back to stock with the x4 would be in Hptuners sight like starting over again with a new tune on a different vehicle, so I would have to buy 2 credits...unless he's mistaken.
it's not a big deal honestly. I can manage it the way it is.

It would be sweet if I could unmarry the x4 (without flashing back to stock) and use it to start over. If I could unmarry it and then use it to datalog the existing tune, maybe 5 Star or someone could build a compatible SCT file with certain user options left open so I could make minor changes at the track without a laptop.
Then again I would probably have to work around not having any kitty cats on the truck if I were to switch back to SCT. There's probably more to it than that. These are just random thoughts.

He is mistaken.
You just have to flash it back to stock at his place which unlocks your x4, then he has to flash you back to your current tune with his hptuners device.
hpt license is for your vin number and pcm serial number not os id or strategy

Now one would think that being a shop owner (20 years in the business) he would know this, however it's one of his employees that actually does the tuning and has more hands on knowledge about the specifics with hptuners. To his credit though the owner does give way to the employee when there's a difference of opinion about a tuning issue or question.
I think he forgot to unlock the x4 so he's trying to probably cover his tracks. It's not a big deal....unless it were something that winds up costing me a lot of extra money. It may also be that they assumed I knew more than I do or did, for example when they did my gear swap and don't tell me until after the fact that the truck had an open differential in it. He assumed I already knew it as the truck had a couple of gear swaps before. So it wound up costing me more money when I had them go back in and install the truetrac.

Thank you for that information. I will for sure follow up with him about it. I'm sure it's just a misunderstanding on his part as he knows he stands to sell me an ngauge if I were able to part ways with the x4 without having to pay to unlock it.

That changed with the release of version 4.2.0 (2018), your tuner should probably be using 4.3.x now
Even if it doesn’t work, it will only take you about 30 minutes to do all the swaps.
Lastly I have heard of issues with the ngauge and 11-14s flashing, logging works fine. Could be rumors.
I have no experience with that just passing along information.
You can contact e-motion (maker of the ngauge) and ask them if they are have any known issues.
