New 3.5 Ecoboost owner - Intercooler/Tune Question

I just purchased a 2018 F150 Lariet with the 3.5 Ecoboost. I've only owned one other turbo charged vehicle which was a 2006 Subaru STi. On that car I went full exhaust (up pipe, down pipe, header, cat back), fuel , pump, meth injection, cooler plugs, and a dyno tune. I am not looking to spend that kind of money on my truck. I have a budget of about $2,000. I did a little research last night and besides the obvious tune, it looks like an intercooler upgrade is a good bang for the buck. If that's not the case, please let me know. As far as intercoolers go I see a few options: Mishimoto and Wagner with the Wagner being the more expensive of the two. I would be looking to do the install myself so ease of installation is a priority with performance being a close second. Any recommendations? As far as the tune goes, I read through the MPT and the 5 Star posts. Whoever I go with I would want to package the intercooler and the tune/controller together. I'd also like a 93 performance tune, 91 performance tune and a tow tune. This isn't my daily driver - it's more of a toy. I traded in a loaded 2013 Mustang GT for it and I need something with some balls. Before the GT I had a 2007 Corvette Z06 and the Sti.

Anyway, I have always relied on car forums in the past and this seems like a great one for the F150. If I should be doing something else with the $2000 budget, please let me know. Thanks!

Welcome, Ed. A tune is a must have. With the intercooler, do you plan on replacing the intercooler piping as well? The OEM piping is plastic and plagued by heat soaking.

Welcome to the forum Ed!

These EcoBoost trucks are a great platform to start with, but we can definitely help take them to a whole new level. We offer some great custom performance tunes for the EcoBoost F-150s along with several other modifications to help improve performance efficiency and drivability further as well. Just starting out with the custom tuning alone via our Mycalibrator tuning device we've found dyno proven gains in up to 70+ Wheel HP and 60 WTQ on an otherwise stock truck running 93 octane. The tuner can store up to 4 custom tunes along with a 5th stock tune file and we support the device for life with free tune updates as well. We offer octane specific tunes in Performance and towing capable versions for 87, 89, 91, and 93 octane and can even write tunes for higher octane race fuel if needed as well for most platforms.

From there we also offer our Windstorm cold air intake, Evenflo colder thermostat, Thunderstorm exhaust systems. and even our new Evenflo catch cans as well. We are also a certified dealer of most all of other brands of products available on the market today for additional modifications you may be interested such as the upgraded intercoolers as well. Many of our customers prefer to start out with a some of the simpler bolt on mods such as a level 1 / Stage 1 type of package which is typically our Mycal tuner, Windstorm cold air intake, and our cooler thermostat. From there we get into the more in depth modifications such as the exhaust, downpipes, intercoolers, methanol injection, etc.

Below is a link to the Mycal tuner for your truck on our website for more info or to place an order as well. Feel free to give us a shout if you'd like to discuss this further or to get an estimate set up for a complete performance package and we would be happy to help out.

Check out the Whipple Ecoboost intercooler, it’s a direct replacement.

As for tunes check out "5star tuning" if you want a warranty, and "gearhead tuning" if you want a tune that can be run on 87-93 auto octane tune.

Also check out "Palm Beach Dyno", one of the best coyote tuners in the country is making some killer Ecoboost tunes.

Thank you. I am not sure where you are located, but would you happen to know any reputable dyno shops in or around eastern CT? I am in the Danbury/New Milford/Harford area of CT.

Just say Hartford - no one knows New Milford!

It's Connecticut, in an hour and a half or less you could be in 4 other states so don't limit yourself. :D

Not 100% sure but Pro Edge tuning in wallingford is great with the mustang guys...might try starting there and seeing what Bill says. If it wasn't for warranties i'd say tune is at the top of the list.
