Ford e-locker or Detroit Truetrac Whipple
 
I have been out of my Ford for over a year now but I am ready to come back.

I would be building a 2wd street truck, no drag strip time. Whipple is on the short list right meow.

Would you order your truck with the factory e-locker or open diff and have a Truetrac installed? Is there something better?

I'd go LSD, so you could take advantage of the increased traction at any time. The Ford E-locker is fine and dandy for its intended purpose, but a drag tool it is not. I know there are plenty who launch with it engaged, but I'd be nervous to do a full power high traction drag launch on the e-locker, just based on the design whereby there is a little play until the locking mechanism engages.

I have a 4wd/e-locker supercharged truck with a TVS (lots of torque), and while I launch it in 4wd, for daily driving its always in 2wd, and I wish I had an LSD installed as its difficult to find traction with my open diff. Even when passing it'll occasionally break the tires loose depending on the road surface, and that's really where an LSD would help me. Granted an LSD might also make the back end a little loose under power, but it'd be better then the 1 wheel peels everywhere. Mind you I have 295 section width summer performance tires....don't even ask about what it was like with the stock AT tires.

From my understanding the Truetrac has a seamless operation correct? No abrupt locking unlocking that can be detected?

you'll never even notice it.

I gotta say though, it's a massive unit compared to one that goes in a 8.8 and weighs considerably more than the stock open diff that's in there now. I'll hazard that it weighs in around 70lbs or so. So when the truck's up in the air on the lift with a ring gear bolted to it, make sure you ate your Wheaties cause it's gonna be heavy to lift up in there.

Truetrac all the way. I have a TT in the '05 and an ELD in the '13. The TT is far more useful and plenty positive. If you stomp it, it spins both tires (it has 4.56's so it WILL spin the tires). I'm seriously considering dumping the ELD in the '13 and buying another TT. It's that good.
PS -- It IS heavier than the stock carrier, but not THAT heavy. Maybe 40 lb.

I'll be doing the true trac some time soon probably. Although I my E-locker has survived abuse for 20k miles without issue with a decent amount of track time/launches.

when are you going to the track? You're in san Antonio or close by, right?

I recently put Truetracs in my Jeep front and rear and it is awesome. They really do grip well, and I can get through situations in 2wd that required 4x4 before.

The rear truetrac is invisible, you would never know it was there. The front is more apparent when in AWD/4WD mode because it want to straighten the wheel when cornering under power. You can feel it tugging to get the tires straight and it really wants to snap back to center.

I have the factory e-locker in my F150, and it does what its supposed too, but for driving around on the street I would much rather have a truetrac in the rear.
