5 Star or MPT
I am going to order a SCT X4 tuner with tunes but am torn between 5 Star and MPT. I would like to make my truck more drive-able and a better towing truck. I am getting a new trans next week and would like it to have better shifting, and better throttle response. On the highway it always lugged and you had to really press down on the gas to get it to move. Then it would down shift for 5 seconds then up shift. Its all over the place. I am not going to use anything other than 87 octane and would not want any decrease in mileage. Not really looking to squeeze every bit of horsepower out of the 5.0. I am not racing it, just want it fun to drive and stop this shifting all over the place.
MPT price is a lot cheaper but I do not want that to be my deciding factor. However, with 5 Star, I am surprised that when you drop $500 for a tuner that shipping is not free.

I have a 2013 5.0 and had tunes for both. With what you are describing, I think you would be very happy with either. I bought my first tune from 5-star when my truck was stock and was very happy with the results, immediate difference in shifting, throttle response, that lugging you speak of was gone, but as I added modifications/performance parts and they sent me tune revisions, the truck was not spot on, it was sloppy. I tried some data logging with not great results. Customer service was okay, not great. I went to MPT, and their tune really woke the truck up. Now I do go to the track and don't tow. So I might not be your best resource. But for me, my recommendation would be MPT. There customer service is great, it might take a few days to get a tune revision back, if you have them read a data log and revise, but all in all very good experience. I don't know how many tunes you are buying, but I would recommend a 93 octane tune.

Cant go wrong with either one, I have MPT93X and enjoy the better throttle responses, and when it shifts from 1st to 2nd on 35's and heavy rims it chirps the tires with a 3.7 motor, which in itself is impressive. But all I have read and heard any of there tunes do there job.

Thanks. I just FB messaged MPT asking how it works. On their website you buy the tuner and pick the option of buying 3 custom tunes or 5 custom tunes. There is nothing specific about the tunes. So I assume I buy the tuner with 3 tunes, once I get it I get my strategy code, then I call them to discuss which 3 tunes I want, then they email them to me?
You guys are really putting 93 octane in? Expensive.

I am doing some more mods this tax season, and I will be having MPT do my updated tunes.

I bought 3 tunes from MPT. 87 Chill, 93 Chill, and 93 Street. 93 tunes really woke the truck up. But I only ran them for a couple of weeks. I just didn't see the cost benefit of spending that much on gas for the HP gains I got. The 87 tune was really good to, and I have been running it for 2 years.

From this list I think the "87 performance tow" is what I am looking for.
Good luck with the taxes. I just got mine done and got half of what I got last year back because of the new tax laws.

I do not see a "87 Chill" tune.

I'm getting back more than normal in taxes. But I'm self employed.

For towing hands down 5 Star, no one makes better tow tunes. Give them a call and ask for Josh.
Not to take anything away from MPT I really liked them also but no comparison for tow tunes.

I have a 2009 5.4 4x4 CC and have tuning from VMP 5star SSI and MPT. Various tunes in various octanes. The best towing tune for me is 5star 91 octane, the torque converter lock up is fantastic. Most of the shifts are snappy and firm. SSI tow tune is pretty hot, did a 2500k round trip towing 5k and a full bed + family and it was very strong. SSI customer service could be better. MPT tow tune is mediocre compared to 5star but better than stock. MPT 93 "race" tune is quite strong and the shifts are smooth and snappy, I really like this tune when I'm not towing. VMP tow tune is close to stock but the shifting is cleaned up and the power is very smooth, not a big bump in power but it's there. All of these tunes address the sloppy drive by wire tuning from the factory which makes for a much nicer driving experience day to day. My old girl is quite a bit different than the new trucks and I would expect my experience is much different compared to say an 18 booster or 5L. I would estimate I've been tuned for about 130000 km's without any issues, best money I spent on my truck about 8 years ago. I would phone 5star and MPT if those are the guys you are focusing on and have a chat with them. Nice thing is once you own the tuning device you can get tunes from most vendors, can't go wrong!

I bought the MPT. Once I get it I will call them to discuss what tunes would be best for me. Do not want want to tear the truck up. Especially seeing I just had to get another trans at 26K miles
