Default Tuning Question, Advice needed!!

Hey guys. I have a 2004 f150 5.4 3v with 3:73 LS. I'm looking into an edge programmer to firm up my shifts and help my truck preform better. I'm just wondering if tuning my truck will keep it running reliably? My friend told me that it wouldn't be a reliable option. But I've seen so many other people tuning their trucks. Just curious to if it is worth it in the long run?

Tuning and reliability depend on the variables changed and the quality of the tune. A bad tune can kill a motor, a good tune will hardly have any impact on the lifespan of an engine. People can run into issues if they run an aggressive tune with lower octane fuel then is required by the tune, or an aggressive tune while towing a heavy load. Just use common sense and I doubt you'll have an issues.
I've been "tuned" for the last 29,000 miles with a supercharger bolted up to my truck and she has not blown up yet. Different platform yes, but same principles apply....a good tune should not harm an engine within reason, even in my case where I'm making 13lbs of boost.

I was thinking about getting the edge evolution. I've heard good thinks about it. I know it's a canned tune, but do you think it's a good product? I'm not wanting to break the bank. If not edge what would you recommend?

Most of the canned tunes should be pretty safe and mild...those companies would not stay in business long if their tuners nuked motors on a regular basis. Just use common sense, and if you tune for premium gas make sure to use premium gas, and don't tow on an aggressive tune. I imagine you'll be ok, and it should sharpen throttle response and add a bit of power.

Ok I really do appreciate it! Will it sharpin up the shift points? My truck tends to shift in and out of overdrive a good bit cause I have 35" tires on it. I'm hoping the canned tune will help.

It'll certainly firm up the shifts, but as for the overdrive issue that's more about available torque and load due to the large tires. A re-gear would help with that issue, to counteract the larger heavier tires which reduce your overall effective final drive ratio. That said a tuner just might make the difference, but I would not "expect" it to help, that way you wont be disappointed when it wont, as I don't think it is going to.

Oh ok. I'm learning as I go. I've heard about regearing. I'll probably wind up putting 4:10 gears in my truck. That'll probably bring it back to "stock" ratio. Either way I'll eventually regear. I sure do appreciate all the help man. Means a lot!
