thats interesting, u would think that changing the oil even to the same weight, it would have went away some, since the old oil that was in it would have been broken down some.

I don't know enough to try it but I also have heard of some people adding some gas in there oil for a short time to help stop this type of issue. My 02 I had (4.6L) would tap for a few seconds on start up maybe 5 or so but that was it.

I couldn't find that post again but what I did find should be helpful. First if it hasn't been done, change the PVC valve and change the oil adding one less quart than what's required. Then for the last quart add one quart of transmission fluid (Dextron II). Drive it for 500 miles and change it again. Tranny fluid has more detergents in it and it might clean out whatever is making the lifters stick.

Triton Engine spitting spark plugs
Hey, I have a 98 F-150 with a 5.4. L V8, and it makes this ticking noise when my rpms rise. It quites down when it changes gears and the rpms drop, but as I put my foot into it it gets louder and faster up to when it shifts, then it goes soft again untill the rpms rise towards the next gear.
I've read through this series of posts, and I have to confess that I know more about airplane engines than I do about the Ford Triton. Several posters here are suspecting the noise is from a "LIFTER," but these engines have overhead camshafts and DO NOT HAVE LIFTERS. The problem is more than likely a spark plug about to be blow out of the aluminum head.
Google "FORD TRITON BLOWN SPARK PLUGS" and you'll see that thousands of these problems have happened (to my Ford 5.4 TWICE.)
I just posted a video on YouTube about this. Please type in my moniker
"TUUTUUTANGO" on YouTube and watch my video. After two blown plugs (one was an insert repair gone bad) I decided to purchase a remanufactured engine from Jasper... I get new timing chains, hoses, the WORKS and a little more Peace-Of-Mind this way for my out-of-town trips.
I am very leery of the people welling these "insert kits" because I have heard of many of these inserts blowing out the aluminum head too. Now I am a victim. One guy's F150 truck caught on fire andalmost killed him when his spark plug blew out and ruptured a fuel line... Wow, what a way to start a fire! That spark plug was still making a hot gap and simply lighted the fuel... The guy's truck was completely destroyed!
AGAIN, go to YouTube, type in my moniker or simply do a search for FORD TRITON SPARK PLUG PROBLEM and you'll probably find my video fairly fast. OR, SIMPLY CLICK ON THIS LINK, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=perM62V-XZE, and you'll go directly to the video and my story.
GOOD LUCK.

Jasper 5.4 RemaN, HOLY Guacamole
Not sure if that's how you spell GUACAMOLE, but I'm so "initially" impressed with my "just installed Jasper" I'm about to burst!
In the two years I've owned my 1998 Ford with the 5.4 TriTon engine, this vehicle HAS NEVER idled so smoothly.
I bought this rig from a scoundrel off of Ebay (said it was a real cream-puff) and it wasn't. The engine always had a funny rough spot, something like nearly a bad plug wire. (Probably why the guy delivered it for free from Amarillo, Texas to Abilene, Texas because he didn't want me driving it home!)
Once his employee unloaded this, I immediately noticed several discrepancies NOT FULLY DISCLOSED IN THE AUCTION, mainly the engine running rough... and several other SERIOUS issues too lengthy to discuss (or cuss) here. But I did make the SCOUNDREL pay a $4,000 repair bill at Arrow Ford in Abilene after I raked him over the coals.
Long story made short, I took the van to our Ford dealership, and asked them to analyze the numerous problems. They attributed the rough idle to a spark plug insert repair job (probably done by the Amarillo Scoundrel by one of his shade-tree mechanics (working without the benefit of any shade!)
Arrow Ford in Abilene said they were very confident that the insert "probably" changed the compression just enough, to make that one cylinder run rough.
I installed new wires and still no resolution, until the installation of the Jasper Reman (which I've driven 100 miles today.) I can tell you, this engine is running PURRfectly (but only time will tell.)
Jasper Remanufactured Engines states in their website that they "ADDRESS" known problem areas in certain engine designs and make these "problem areas" better than when they left the factory. I don't know how you would "beef-up" a poorly designed aluminum head having only 4 or 5 threads available to hold down the new "itsy-bitsy" spark plugs they are using in engines these days, but I HOPE that something indeed has been done to give me peace-of-mind that my Ford won't blow a third spark plug.
Keep tuned to my YouTube videos because I plan on posting a follow-up video soon about the " Jasper experience..." (so far, I AM DELIGHTED!)
OH, forgot to mention, I was looking at a $3,000+ repair job from the Arrow Ford dealership to replace the heads only...
For $6,770, (at a private shop in Abilene, Texas) I basically got an entirely new engine with new ignition coils, new hoses, spark plugs, filters... the whole enchilada as we say here in Texas...
Now time for a COLD cerveza, some guacamole and a shady place to enjoy the sound of my Ford, as it idles sweeter than I've ever heard it before... Good Luck, Y'all. Watch them "dainged" aluminum heads.
