timing without cam tool on a 2v 4.6?

timing without cam tool on a 2v 4.6?
hi everyone.
i blew my head gasket and so obviously i have to take the heads off.
this is my first motor teardown so when i hear people say you need this special tool to keep the timing right its a little nerve racking.
so my question is, can i not just make marks on the cam gears and crank gear to line the chain up with? then ill just let the cam rotate when i pull it off and turn it to the right spot when i put it back together?
also another question, when i took my intake mani off, under that retarted plastic part, i found a bunch of flat broken plastic chunks. does anyone know what this is?
