Default Stripped Torque Converter nut

I am trying to take my engine out which i am replacing. Trying to undo the torque converter nut I stripped it. I have tried a nut extractor on it but it is so soft it just eats into it. Any suggestions, ideas? Should I take the TC out with the engine and work on it that way?
thanks.

98 ford 150, 4.6 v8, auto trans. rear wheel drive.

Save yourself the headache and pull the TC with the engine, once out you will have ample room to remove the bad nut along with the others, I changed my 5.4 2005 this past weekend. Just exercise caution when separating the engine and Tranny.

Yeah, i was thinking of doing that. Someone told me that getting the TC back in can be difficult, did you run in to any problems. Also, is there some kind of pump to be careful of breaking when pulling it out.

I've never worked on a Ford transmission before, but I'm sure it isn't different from a Chevy

If you don't get the TC fully engaged on the splines, as soon as you try to go anywhere it will break the pump.

Don't let this process scare you, once you get the tranny unbolted, remove it with the engine. Once off you can access the TC nuts from the side giving you a better angle and grip. Once the TC is off installation in the tranny is easy. place the TC on the spline shaft and "rotate it" as you push it into the tranny housing, you should feel it seat into the pump. if you're not sure you are completly in continue to spin and push two full rotations. BTW replace all of the TC nuts once out.

When you say remove it with the engine, you mean just the TC not the whole Tranny, right? That is what I was hoping I could do and then do just what you said. I was worried that I would break something the the TC out of the Tranny when i pull the motor out.

Correct...place something under the tranny to support it and pull both TC and engine away, be prepared to loose some tranny fluid.

Got the motor out now have to work on the bolts. I have soaked them with penetrating oil. Might have to end up using nut splitter.
