WELL BLOW ME DOWN! I hope we haven't mislead you @ck.falcon. I _Never_ knew Ford changed firing order around on any given in production engine.

Proves - even "old geezers" have more to learn. And there is tons of knowledge available here from good members like @River1 and @jdinner. Thanks to both.
According to information at http://www.f150hub.com/specs/302.html - I see the 95 and later 302 "HO" (guess that means high output) has the firing order of "1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 (95+ 302 HO).

HOWEVER !!!!!!! --- I WOULD NOT JUST WHOLESALE "TRY" A DIFFERENT FIRING ORDER. Doing so could cause serious backfiring and jump the timing chain on a high milage engine. Honestly, I can't imagine it even starting and "idling" at all with the opposite of these two firing orders.
1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8
1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8

But, if you can not determine EXACTLY which engine you have, I would suggest you try the following test. There are FOUR (4) CYLINDERS that match in the two firing orders. The engine would have to be running on those cylinder's only. From looking at them, I'm not sure exactly what the other cylinders would be doing - but they are not supporting proper ignition. SO - I would unplug the MISMATCHING FOUR (4) "1-X-X-2-6-X-X-8" and see what the change is. It should run about the same if at all. You could plug those four in (the other order) ONE at a time to see if things start to smooth out. This would certainly reduce the chance of jumping timing form a serious backfire.

Good luck - and APOLOGIES if I we gave you incorrect info.

F150Torqued,

If it wasn't for an afternoon and evening in a buddy's barn and how many times I heard Ford, 302 and the entire range of adjectives and adverbs there is no way I would have known anything about a firing order. This just happens to be that one motor. I will respectfully defer to you any and everyday.

^^^ There's the true value to a forum such as this. Everyone gets the benefit of everyone's experiences - & for free. Like yours & your buddy's, mine came mostly from tearing up / fixin' stuff in a barn in my hot rodding days in the 60's before getting drafted. Thanks for chiming in with your experience. In this case - it was certainly more useful than mine.

Yall remember that old saying trust but verify. it has been proven today. i went out to try the new firing orders and got ready to do it and, for some unknown reason i looked down. and there above the radio was a sticker with the correct firing order 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. which is different from what the chilton manual states.....should have verified. you guys helped me out a **** ton and i am very appreciative. although the problem was solved out of shier dumb luck I learned alot in the last few days. you guys are awsome and i hope that i will be able to contribute well to the forum.

Default Firing order often stamped on engine

Please give me a moment to wipe the egg off my face before you spread TOO much praise on us... Have to admit it should have occurred to me to look around on the vehicle way back when I was scolding you for not providing US more information about your vehicle. I remember seeing MANY different engines with the firing order forged into or stamped onto an intake manifold runner or on a brass plate under a carburetor bolt or somewhere. (Opps - carburetor?- I'm dating myself again) Just glad you got it worked out successfully.
